'Gloire de Dijon'

WHEN she rises in the morning
I linger to watch her;
She spreads the bath-cloth underneath the window
And the sunbeams catch her
Glistening white on the shoulders,
While down her sides the mellow
Golden shadow glows as
She stoops to the sponge, and her swung breasts
Sway like full-blown yellow
Gloire de Dijon roses.

She drips herself with water, and her shoulders
Glisten as silver, they crumple up
Like wet and falling roses, and I listen
For the sluicing of their rain-dishevelled petals.
In the window full of sunlight
Concentrates her golden shadow
Fold on fold, until it glows as
Mellow as the glory roses.

SEE the stars, love,
In the water much clearer and brighter
Than those above us, and whiter,
Like nenuphars.

Star-shadows shine, love,
How many stars in your bowl?
How many shadows in your soul,
Only mine, love, mine?

When I move the oars, love,
See how the stars are tossed,
Distorted, the brightest lost.
—So that bright one of yours, love.

The poor waters spill
The stars, waters broken, forsaken.
—The heavens are not shaken, you say, love,
Its stars stand still.

There, did you see
That spark fly up at us; even
Stars are not safe in heaven.
—What of yours, then, love, yours?

What then, love, if soon
Your light be tossed over a wave?
Will you count the darkness a grave,
And swoon, love, swoon?


'Cherry Robbers'

Under the long, dark boughs, like jewels red
In the hair of an Eastern girl
Shine strings of crimson cherries, as if had bled
Blood-drops beneath each curl.

Under the glistening cherries, with folded wings
Three dead birds lie:
Pale-breasted throstles and a blackbird, robberlings
Stained with red dye.

Under the haystack a girl stands laughing at me,
With cherries hung round her ears--
Offering me her scarlet fruit: I will see
If she has any tears.

Objetivos

“Hay pocos escritores que dividan a sus lectores tan drásticamente como lo hizo y sigue haciendo D. H. Lawrence” señala Terry Eagleton. El seminario está orientado hacia una re-consideración de la obra de Lawrence, teniendo presente que ésta no se circunscribe a las novelas ya que fue asimismo poeta, artista plástico, dramaturgo, ensayista, crítico, escritor, periodista cultural. Sus Studies in Classical American Literature (1923), texto fundacional de los “American Studies” en Estados Unidos, para dar un ejemplo, son ensayos innovadores y muy controvertidos. Se buscará en el seminario examinar y dar cuenta de las muy distintas e incluso opuestas lecturas que se han hecho de su obra: escritor emblemático anti-victoriano, de gran impacto en generaciones rebeldes posteriores, tuvo influencia literaria y vital dentro y fuera de Inglaterra (traducido tempranamente en Sur, criticado duramente por Simone de Beauvoir, y por Kate Millett.) El seminario se centrará sobre todo en la lectura de algunas obras de Lawrence, ese escritor “agudamente moderno y astutamente anti-modernista” como señala Sandra Gilbert.

Pinturas y dibujos. La exposición de 1929. William Blake como referente lawrenciano en el ensayo de presentación “An introduction to these paintings” escrito por Lawrence.
